We're Here to Help You!
Coming to college is a big step. But you need not worry too much because our Students’ Union (SU) is here to help you! The SU provides advice and support on a wide variety of issues to students. If you need any assistance on accommodation, welfare or educational issues, there is always a member of the SU available. Our SU is very active in organising events and nights out to keep everyone busy as well as supporting the many vibrant clubs and societies on campus. The main events throughout the year include:
- Freshers’ Week Halloween Party
- Christmas Party
- Trips Abroad
- Music Week (RAG Week)
- Lunchtime Concerts
- Social Justice Week
- Compassion Week
- College Ball
- Staff Vs Students Soccer Tournament
The SU represents all students at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. I, as the President, attend all meetings within the College and act on behalf of the students. I also sit on meetings regarding the academic quality of life for students in Mater Dei.
MDI, although smaller than most other colleges, offers a friendly and inclusive environment for students to study and socialise in. The college generally operates on a first name basis and therefore creates an environment that helps to build, protect and involve those attending MDI. The college offers both a wide range of academic and social roles within the college. There are many societies and clubs which are also increasing annually that provides a social outlet for students. There is also a large support network here for all students and staff, which is a vital part of college life within the Institute. It is a support network that caters for both school leavers and for mature students returning to education.
Third level education is a new challenge that can prove to be intimidating on some levels. Anonymity is a part of college life that can prove burdensome or fruitful for some. In MDI you can have either, but generally anonymity is rarely the case. I would urge all incoming students to embrace all aspects of third level education available and enjoy them. It is a short lived time of growth and maturity yet rich and memorable.
