Irish Studies - Student Voices
Brendan Power (Irish Studies Student 2004-2007)
"In pursuing the course in Irish Studies at Mater Dei students will have the opportunity of studying Ireland as a whole rather than analysing cognate aspects of that experience which can be the case at other institutions. Through the study of such various topics as Irish history, Irish literature, Irish cinema, Irish art, Irish popular culture, Irish philosophy and more the course offers unique insights through a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach. It also allows for the discussion of the Irish experience in a comparative model which can open new ways of thinking and new ways of explaining and understanding the Irish experience.
The course also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study. Through the use of research projects and archival visits students are engaged with the direct experience of historical research which better equips students for postgraduate study.
Mater Dei also allows for the development of its student body in many ways other than academic. Through numerous clubs and societies the college fosters a very vibrant and engaging student body. I would encourage anybody to study Irish Studies in Mater Dei as it is an extremely interesting and thought-provoking course conducted in a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere".
Brendan is now studying for a M. Phil in Modern Irish History in Trinity College, Dublin.
