St Vincent de Paul Food Appeal

On Thursday 8th December Sean Walsh, Paul Garland and Ciaran Flynn organised a food appeal in aid of St. Vincent de Paul. It was also the final day of term and the lads got everyone engaged in the Charity/Christmas spirit by donating food and wearing festive clothing.

Leisure and the Irish in the Nineteenth Century Conference (Call for Papers)

The eighteenth annual conference of the Society for the Study of Nineteenth Century Ireland on the theme Leisure and the Irish. The call for papers is now open. The conference will take place in the Institute from Thursday 28 June 2012 to Friday 29 June 2012.

Mater Dei Schola on Lyric FM

MDI’s chamber choir has been selected for the Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas competition. Tune in to Niall Carroll’s Classical Daytime on 22nd December to hear the choir perform a Hungarian Christmas lullaby, Karácsonyi Bölcsődal, composed by Lajos Bárdos.

MDI’s Irish Studies seminar series was addressed by Liam Cullen, former special adviser to the government, on Tuesday evening, 29 November. His talk provided a fascinating analysis of the role of the special adviser within the Irish political system.

Visiting St. Peter's College Wexford

On a recent trip to Leaving Certificate students at St. Peter's College Wexford, where Paul Hegarty gave a talk about course and career options available at MDI, he met with two members of staff, recent graduates - Brian Malone, Wexford Senior Football Star and Kilkenny U-21 JonJo Farrell.

The MDI Ladies Futsal team, under the management and coaching of 3rd year students Eoin Walshe and Rob Brennan, gave an excellent account of themselves at the FAI Regional Finals hosted by NUI Maynooth on Monday 28th November.

Pilgrimage to Taizé

A group of 15 MDI students, accompanied by Dr Gabriel Flynn, were on pilgrimage in the International Ecumenical Community of Taizé, France from the 2nd to the 5th of November. The pilgrimage was part of a practical ecumenism module.

Great Turnout at Open Day

On Saturday last, we welcomed prospective students, their family, friends, teachers and guidance counsellors to our annual Open Day. The event was a great success with students travelling from all over Ireland to meet staff and students of the Institute.

Memorial Service at St. Alphonsus Monastery

On Thursday, 17th November, Fr Pat O' Donoghue of the MDI School of Theology conducted a memorial service for the dead St. Alphonsus Monastery, Iona Road, Drumcondra. A large congregation attended the service of readings, hymns and prayers.

On Thurs 27 October, 65 Fourth Year BRelEd students visited Edgehill Theological College, Belfast, as part of their Ecumenism Module. The students were welcomed by Dr Richard Clutterbuck, the Principal of Edgehill, who delivered a series of lectures on Eucharist and Church governance.
