The Programme

This taught Masters programme is located in a vibrant School of Theology which offers a variety of opportunities for specialized teaching and research in an interdisciplinary context. Theology in MDI is rooted in the Catholic Christian tradition, engaged in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, with a commitment to global and social justice and the promotion of human rights.

Postgraduate programmes in theology are open to students interested in research in the areas of systematic theology, theological ethics, philosophical theology, biblical theology and pastoral theology. The MA (Theology) is of particular interest to those aiming to progress to doctoral research, but it also attracts teachers of Religious Education, chaplains, clergy and pastoral workers. Persons wishing to pursue theological studies in the context of life-long learning are also encouraged to apply.

Modules

Participants who wish to obtain a Master's Award must complete six of the following taught modules:

Anthropology, Ethics and Politics: Directions in Contemporary Theology
Christology in Dialogue with Culture Today
Contemporary Continental Philosophy and the Question of God
Contemporary Issues in Ecclesiology
Contemporary Issues in Ecumenism and Inter-religious Dialogue
Eschatology: The Denial of Death and the Eclipse of Hope
Faith and Culture in Ireland: Religion and Belief in a Secular Age
Gospel and Gospels: Issues in Contemporary Biblical Interpretation
Philosophy and God: Selected Readings
The Church in the City: Early Christian Communities
Sacramental Theology
Theological Perspectives on Ethics

In addition they must complete a Research Module, which includes a minor thesis.

Awards

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award Master of Arts in Theology. It is also possible to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Theology, or a Graduate Certificate in Theology. Individual modules may also be audited without obtaining an award.

The programme is offered on a full-time (one year) or part-time basis (two years).

Entry Requirements

The general criteria for entry to this taught postgraduate programme is a good honours primary degree or equivalent.
Students who do not meet the normal criteria may be considered for a place on the programme on the basis of their work experience and other relevant educational achievements.
Applicants seeking Accreditation of Prior (Certified) Learning (APL) for the purposes of entry, module exemptions or advanced entry, or applicants seeking Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) for the purposes of entry or module exemptions will also be considered.
